iOS Games for Walking Dead Fans

After decades of languishing on the fringe, zombie culture has really pushed into the mainstream over the last few years. It might be easy to trace this modern renaissance of the undead to books like World War Z, but if there's one thing that can turn us all into brain-dead zombies, it's television.

It's only fitting, then, that America's love of zombies is at its most pronounced when watching AMC's The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman's comic book series of the same name.

While a TV show can only provide you zombie apocalypse fun for 60 minutes a week, a mobile game can let you fight back the horde anytime the mood strikes your fancy. With that in mind, we heartily endorse the following seven games as a perfect fit for Walking Dead fans with an iPhone or iPad to play on.

The Walking Dead: No Man's Land

The Walking Dead: No Man's Land lets players build their own team of survivors as they scavenge the world around them, trying to live for just one more day.

The gameplay here is a lot like 2K's immensely popular XCOM franchise, asking players to spend action points to move and attack as they navigate a series of missions, with different survivor types able to perform different attacks. Few things in this post-apocalyptic world are quite as satisfying as lining up some zombies and using the hunter's rifle to execute a chain of them in a single shot.

Between missions, players will build up their camp and use their radio to find more (and hopefully stronger) survivors to join their ranks.

The Walking Dead: Road to Survival

Scopely

Based on the comic rather than the TV show, The Walking Dead: Road to Survival tells the story of Phillip Blake's transformation from a fresh-faced Woodbury arrival to the town's criminally insane Governor.

The game mostly focuses on turn-based combat, with deadly waves of zombies edging closer to your party of heroes after every turn.

There's also a PVP element, and the opportunity for players to build their own Woodbury, because what fun would living in a zombie-infested wasteland be if you couldn't raid a neighboring town for resources from time to time?

The Crossing Dead

Wizard Games Inc

Trapped somewhere between a parody and an homage is The Crossing Dead, a fan-made game that pays tribute to both The Walking Dead and Crossy Road.

And while that description dances dangerously close to every other Crossy Road clone out there, The Crossing Dead cleverly adds weapons and plenty of zombies to slay. These demands different strategies from the player, making The Crossing Dead more evolution than a shameless copycat.

The Walking Dead Pinball

The Walking Dead Pinball
Zen Studios

The one game that should have topped this list is Telltale's The Walking Dead series, but at the time of this writing, the game is no longer available on the App Store. Luckily the series' pinball spinoff by Zen Studios is still around, giving us one last connection to protagonists Lee and Clementine.

Offering a single table, The Walking Dead pinball mirrors the story of the first season of the Telltale game, reproducing key locations and offering missions where you'll choose who lives and who dies. That's some heavy stuff for a game with two flippers and a silver ball.

Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadville

Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville

Survival isn't just about stabbing zombies in the face; it's about planning for the future, too. A good leader knows how to delegate, and isn't afraid to recruit the right team and send them off to fight your battles. Rebuild 3 mixes survivor management with city building, challenging players to lead humanity boldly into its next era...

...mostly by sending other poor schmucks to be zombie food.

Unlike previous Rebuild games, you'll have the choice between a real-time or turn-based experience. Sure you could take it easy and think about every move -- but it's not like you'll have time to think in the real zombie future.

Unkilled

Unkilled
Madfinger Games

With the right amount of firepower, any zombie problem can be fixed. Unkilled is the latest game from the zombie-hunting creators of the Dead Trigger series, and it gives players more than enough heavy weaponry to work with.

Just point and shoot. Containing a zombie plague is the sort of thing you need to do one bullet at a time.

The Walking Dead: Assault

The Walking Dead Assault
Skybound Entertainment

One of the earliest Walking Dead games on the App Store is also one of the finest. The Walking Dead: Assault is set at the beginning of the story, during Rick's escape from the hospital. The Walking Dead: Assault is a real-time strategy game based on the world of Kirkman's comic books, complete with black and white aesthetic.

Having originally released in 2012, it seems as though the future chapters (as promised in the "More Episodes" menu) are unlikely to materialize at this point, and that's a shame because what you'll find in chapter one is utterly fantastic.
